Here is a list of questions to ask when choosing an air duct cleaning company.
How long will it take?
A proper cleaning takes time and attention to detail, we usually spend at least 3 hours at a job. For larger houses we take up to 5 or 6 hours.
How many access points will be made?
It is very important to create access points on each of the main ducts, and we are not referring to 1 inch cleaning holes. Make sure the company you hire creates enough access points to inspect everything they clean.
What kind of vacuum will be used?
Proper air duct cleaning takes a tremendous amount of suction, our hypervac 220 creates about 5000 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of suction. We bring our vacuum right in the house and set it up as close to the furnace as possible. The more suction hose you attach to a vacuum the less suction you will have. In our opinion anything less than a 220v system will not be sufficient.
What kind of tools will be used?
If the supply runs in your house are 20 feet long or have bends in them you will want to make sure the company is using tools to properly scrub your ducts, and long air whips to push the debris all the way down the branch. A simple hand valve is only going to send the debris 5 or 6 feet down the duct.
Will they seal off your system?
Unless they have a powerful truck vacuum and your house is small, you’ll want to make sure that they completely seal off your entire system. If they leave all the vents open the suction loss will be tremendous and there will not be enough negative pressure to complete the job.
Do they use cleaning zones?
Do they offer coil cleaning?
If you have a heat pump then you will most likely have some microscopic mold and bacteria in your coil and supply duct work. This is from running the AC in the summer months. Your duct system is a dark cool place and with that extra moisture from your AC coil it is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Make sure the company you hire is trained in properly cleaning and caring for your coil. Air washing a coil is not going to improve your air quality.
